A functional capacity evaluation (FCE) evaluates an individual's capacity to perform work activities related to his or her participation in employment (Soer et al., 2008). The FCE process compares the individual's health status, and body functions and structures to the demands of the job and the work environment.

Medico-legal work is a term used to describe a field of practice where the occupational therapist works with the legal fraternity to help them quantify or qualify a legal matter. Therapists are referred injured clients from private or state attorneys who request an assessment of the functional abilities/restrictions of these clients, a written report on the assessment for legal use and to be available for consultation and/or to testify as an expert witness. These therapists are usually called in to assist in personal injury matters (such as Road Accident Fund Claims, Medical Malpractice or Civil Claims).

We are involved in the management of clients with work-related problems due to ill-health or disability, when employed by the client's case manager. Occupational therapists are well positioned to address the needs of employees with temporary/permanent impairment or people with disabilities, and to prepare them for work in the open labour market, or for work re-entry following sick absence. We also typically make recommendations for reasonable accommodations in the workplace.
